Past Beers
Baby Buffalo
8.9% ABV
Bourbon Barrel-Aged Amber Ale — Baby Buffalo was born by the addition of an amber ale into Buffalo Trace barrels that had recently been used to make Buffalo Meadows. It aged for 22 months barrels until achieving a delightful balance of bourbon booziness and caramel malt character. With low bitterness and notes of dark cherry this beer is smooth, balanced, and exceptionally drinkable despite its not so baby ABV. We hope you like it.
Kook Birds Lager
7.2% ABV
The second version of Kook Birds is a participant in our Lagerization Project. Instead of using an ale yeast this batch of Kook Birds was brewed as a lager with our Uncharted Citra recipe. As with the original beer we collaborated with our kooky pals over at Strathcona Spirits and aged this beer in their Pinot Gin barrels for 24 weeks. The result is fruity and herbal with bold gin character. This version is sharper and more direct than the first release thanks to its Lagerization Project origins. We hope you like it.
Take a Charentes on Me
8.1% ABV
This amber ale made with Belgian yeast was put into fresh Pineau des Charentes barrels shipped straight from Bordeaux and aged for 14 months. It came out of the barrel at 8.1% ABV and transformed into a light brown beer with ruby highlights. It shows light oxidized notes, akin to a sherry, with aromas and flavours of dried fruit and brown sugar.
Mentis Oculi
6.1% ABV
Mentis Oculi is the second release in the Dry Hop Series. This blend of one and a half year mixed-ferment barrels is a collision of two worlds. Old World Tettnang and New World Simcoe, two wildly different hops, blend delightfully to dry hop this beer. The result is honey floral, ripe papaya, and light menthol hop character balanced by a full, round texture and medium-light acidity. We hope you like it.
Songe d’une Prairie Sauvage
5.0% ABV
This collaboration with our friends from Brasserie Dieu Du Ciel! is a turbid mashed lager, fermented in Spanish red wine barrels then conditioned with Brettanomyces for 8 months. This process results in floral, honey character, with over ripe fruit and light Brettanomyces notes. It picks up subtle wine fruitiness and tannin from the barrels and finishes with a delicate tart acidity.
Kook Birds
7.3% ABV
This collaboration between Strathcona Spirits Distillery and Blind Enthusiasm Brewing started with a Cognac puncheon shipped from France. After some clever bartering Strathcona Spirits ended up with the puncheon and Blind Enthusiasm got 5 freshly emptied Pinot Gin barrels in return. Things got kooky when we put our Uncharted Citra into the Pinot Gin barrels. The result is a delicious golden beer with a herbal and orange citrus attack followed by a balanced blast of gin. It finishes with lingering overripe fruit. We hope you like it.
Fruitful Pursuits: Plum
5.8% ABV
The Fruitful Pursuits Series is made in late summer when ripe fruit is in season and at peak quality. For 2019 Plum we used hundreds of kilograms of freshly harvested Damson and President Okanagan plums which stayed on this mixed-ferment blend for 2 months. The result is bright ruby-purple colour, very prominent plum character, and a medium-high acidity.
Un Petit Peu
6.2% ABV
Un Petit Peu (Translation “A Little Bit”) is the first offering in our Dry Hop Series. This blend of one year old mixed-ferment barrels was lightly dry hopped with the French hops Mistral and Barbe Rouge. The unique hops impart red berry aroma and flavor to this bright, light acidity beer. We hope you like it.
El Dorado Reposado
7.3% ABV
What happens when we add one of our favorite hop varieties (El Dorado) to a crisp, fruity beer aged in fresh Tequila barrels for 10 months then blended with a small amount of fresh beer? You get El Dorado Reposado, an astonishing amalgam of agave, hop oils, and alpha acids. This barrel-aged beer walks an amazingly fine line between boozy tequila, patio sipper, and complex quaff. We hope you like it.
Substantially Complete 2019
5.6% ABV
Substantially Complete reflects The Monolith both as a physical entity and the beer it produces. This is our quintessential beer—adventurous, yet balanced. Substantially Complete is fermented using a house-blend of microorganisms in French oak barrels for one year. It was bottle-conditioned for seven months. It has a medium acidity and a bold peach and citrus fruit character.
Buffalo Meadows 2020
11.3% ABV
Our first barrel-aged beer from the Market brewery is a dark lager that was cool-fermented in stainless steel with Alberta blossom honey and bee pollen from Meadow-Sweet Apiaries. It was then aged for 9 months in fresh Buffalo Trace bourbon barrels. The techniques and ingredients give this beer dark fruit notes, and complex salinity, with a warming finish.
Measure of Patience
5.9% ABV
This beer was fermented using a house-blend of microorganisms in French oak barrels for one year. This batch has a medium-light acidity that showcases a balanced and bright stone fruit character. Measure of Patience reflects our effort and focus during the 5 year journey to release our first beer from The Monolith brewery. We hope you like it.
